Primitive Poem by SylvaOnyema (SUPER.T) Ubah

Primitive

Rating: 5.0

Covered
With immortal skin
Kinsmen disguised
Like spirits of the night

Tearjerker villain phantasmagoria
Drum the ceremony of initiation
With smooth and bitter dance

Smooth skin defiled
With jumping sticks
Trembling legs beg for locomotion

Kinsmen excommunicated
For jumping the ladder of manhood
Ethnocentric pride enchanted

What?
Barbaric triggered
Century impregnated ritual
Dance to technology invited

Mask aborted
For communal unification

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
The poem comments on one of African's barbaric culture- the masquerade festival. It is barbaric because of the way they flog people who have not been initiated to the group. The poet expected the masquerade to only entertain and not flog people.

... for jumping the ladder of manhood. The people were sanctioned for failing to be initiated to the masquerade festival.
