The Freedom Song Poem by David Welch

The Freedom Song

Britain thought that they were tough-
told us what to speak,
pay your taxes and shut up-
just how it shall be.

Born in the woods,
for our families trained to fight,
not pushed around,
farmers who protect their rights,
fight in the fields,
fight from the trees,
from Lexington down to Yorktown
we broke the mighty British crown.

I am a yank and I'm singing this song,
singing freedom's song, singing freedom's song,
I am a yank and I'm singing this song
singing freedom's song, singing this song.

The south wanted to own slaves, -
spread them to the west,
set the whole country ablaze-
put us to the test.

Four bloody years,
to save what was best in us,
fought our own kin,
to preserve our holy cause,
no man is owned,
but by themselves,
God commanded that men live free,
we fought and died so that could be.

I am a yank and I'm singing this song,
singing freedom's song, singing freedom's song,
I am a yank and I'm singing this song
singing freedom's song, singing this song.

Nazis, wokies, socialists-
try to rule the world,
so their evil can persist-
they're such joyless churls.

We know the truth,
good men reject power's touch,
repress our thoughts
and you'll soon be out of luck,
good men will not
dare live unfree,
by sanctions, patience, and the gun
we'll fight until tyrants are done.

I am a yank and I'm singing this song,
singing freedom's song, singing freedom's song,
I am a yank and I'm singing this song
singing freedom's song, singing this song.
