When I Was Young Poem by Charles M Moore

When I Was Young

Rating: 5.0

As I gaze back upon my life
as I recall when I was young
remember things I said and done
when I was less afraid
with all the times that I lived through
and all the people I once knew
I realise the way I grew
the way I am today

The days were hard the winters cold
with ragged clothes and shoes well worn
your mouth was hungry for some food
that sometimes never came
I struggled through the leaner years
though never once did shed a tear
was happy in my innocence
and loved my childhood dreams

I never thought that I was poor
the poverty of youth is pure
it's growing up that makes unsure
the way lifes meant to be
the many friends I left behind
I keep their memorys alive
and guard them deeply in my mind
it's just my history.

Sad and touching, Charlie. We all have our day of reckoning, and sometimes it's difficult to go there. But there are always the good memories to offset the bad ones, so life eventually balances out in the long run. Very introspective and thought-provoking. Linda

Thanks for taking me along on your trip down memory lane, Charles. I've enjoyed every second of it. Nostalgic, touching write. Warm regards and a score of 10 from Gina.

I had a second hand rose childhood too Charles, but I was the eldest of 6 and the mother figure. I truly wish it had been carefree, but I will make sure my boys childhoods will be and that is what it taught me. I really enjoyed this trip back to the good/bad old days. 10 from smiling Tai

A powerful vivid description of ones childhood and the struggles one experiences. In particular I like the point you make that as a child you was oblivious to the hardship and lost yourself in your dreams. Reflective without asking for pity, as you say close the poem with its just my history. good write. best wishes Vincent Turner
