I've broken a promise I've made to myself
That I'd return to Ireland in the Spring
But without me grass will grow and flowers will bloom
And birds will build their nests and chirp and sing.

Don't judge people for what you'd like them to be
When their physical presence is all we can see
Since to your sense of values they do not comply
Their right to a fair go of them don't deny.

The swallows fly above the old fields all day
And the birds nest and sing in the woods far away
But I won't be there when the Spring is in bloom
And the valley is fragrant with Nature's perfume.

'Tis Spring in the northern woodlands the chaffinch sings at dawn of day
And the hawthorns are heavily laden in their beautiful white flowers of May
And the scenery it is breath-taking when viewed from the higher ground
The green fields and the lush green valleys for acres and for miles around,

He is always talking to himself old Jimmy some say he's not right in the head
His bungalow once well kept and clean looking from neglect looking more like a shed
He is in his mid to late eighties his wife she has been dead for years
He no longer goes to the Local he used to enjoy his few beers.

You still have the wanderlust in you for to see Lands you've not seen before
For places in the bigger World out there in miles distant From your home shore
To see the Pyramids of Egypt and visit Countries such as India or Pakistan
And other travel destinations in Asia Indonesia, China, Russia and Japan,

Oh sing me a song of the clear mountain rill
That babbles downland from the foot of the hill
By many a hedgerow and many a tree
For to join the big river that flows to the sea.

Above the coastal Town I heard the black swans cry
As to their feeding grounds they flew across the sky
To estuary or lake they travelled in the night
It was not a big flock they flew at a great height.

'Tis not credit where credit is due
'Tis you'll praise me if I praise you
At The Mutual Admiration Club it is their way
To only nice things of each others say.

We hear and read of elite sports people every day
For to watch them in action people big money pay
They are paid huge sums of money and they know great fame
And some of their fans their children in their honour name.
