Hytower Wang Biography

Hytower Wang was born in Taiwan, an island swaddled by the Pacific Ocean in 1950. My native house at Yunlin county locates on the widely opened palm of Chianan Plain nose to nose facing Central Mountain Range, the backbone of Taiwan. In childhood, the clouds slipping from the vale and we, the children getting enough to spare from mothers’ bamboo whip played together on Chianan Plain while Central Mountain Range watched intently. “Behold, in the depths of the Qi, clumps of bamboo flourish. The elegant well-bred men develop themselves by processes like cutting bones, like filing ivories, like polishing jades and like grinding stones…” Chinese classics such as the Poetry Sutra, Thousand Character, Four Books etc., my father recited after martial art practice each morning while I was a primary school boy fell in a deluge. I started to write poems when I was a freshman in campus. However, I quickly came to a realization that unless I had a good command of sentiment I’d better keep poem drafting at a good distance. That’s why I made a detour, choosing patent which involves with science and technique as well as law as my lifelong work. One day I found my father’s recital of Chinese classics didn’t subside but got stronger to converge into a flood, taking my heart as a river bed. In 2015, I published my 1st poetry collection—“Left Cheek” in memory of my homeland.)

Left Cheek
By Hytower 2015

her left cheek profiled out
a plain vast enough
to put therein
a complete
spring
the shadow cast by mountains took a kiss test,
confirming it is sweeter than
what has ever been told.
