J Patrick Murphy Poems

My darkness has overtaken,
My light shrinks beneath its gloom.
When will my wildfire be 'wakened?
That my passion may fin'lly bloom?
...

When first light dawns far in the east,
And hatchlings chirp for morning's feast,
When night's last stars say their goodbyes,
And you awake with dreary eyes,
...

A pebble - tossed into a pond - can boast
A little power. The force within one stone
Producing tiny waves upon its host.
The transformed surface - how reactive prone!
...

My vessel fair 'Duality' faces dark tempest'ous night.
As dreadful storm oppresses, she curses her dreadful plight!
...

Were I a bird
I would race across the skies by day
And nest upon this mountain at night
What for others is an impossible ascent
...

What consumes your thoughts?
As you dwell in your monotony
Do you dream of open plains,
Or have hopes of freedom?
...

Imagination welcomes you!
A land where all your dreams come true.
Although it's such a wondrous place
The ones that stay here long are few.
...

Like shattered glass bestrewn,
This life of Divine ordain.
There is not one who is immune
From agony so chronic.

The people of here stand on solid ground,
And with a single voice, our song resounds:
...

Because of the way it blows through the air,
And the way it's crowned with your usual flair,
Because of the shimmer of your lustrous hair,
You are beautiful to me.
...

I've seen the face of God in western skies
When sunlight utters farewell to the day.
It's clearer still in children's cheerful eyes
When they engage in their creative play.
...

A canvas stretched across the sky
Is brushed with many hues of dark and light.
Orion dives from perch so high,
While Ursa wrestles young bear cub nearby;

With trembling steps so long ago,
I stepped upon this weary road,
Weeds overgrown: not well forebode,
Where it would lead, I did not know.
...

Beneath the scorching rays of sun,
Lies land once diffused with splendid bloom.
But now it lies in ravaged gloom;
It's regal days seem all but done.
...

O Great Divines, arouse in me,
A tale with origins from up above.
I've given up, please grant my plea,
Or else I shall cease to believe in love.
...

On the bridge into tomorrow
There sits a ghastly troll.
If you want to reach the other side,
You must pay his monstrous toll.
...

I dwell within a heart of misery
Daily, I tumble downward
As a snowball rolls
And grows
...

The clock ticks, but it does not move
Progressive infinity
That is what you do to me
When we are together
...

19.

Imprisoned in my own reality;
Freedom is excruciating!
I await the dusk,
That I may imbibe my misery
...

Within my heart, darkness I breed,
Hope is laid waste, all life: destroyed.
Ev'ry defense I can deploy,
Will ne'er grant the relief I need.

J Patrick Murphy Biography

I am a lawyer, traveler, Christian, poet. I write for many different reasons: to clear my head, to escape, to stretch my creativity, to make a statement. There are poems about the battle inside my mind. There are poems about nature. There are poems that are fairy tales. There are poems about love. Some rhyme. Some don't. Some are complex. Some are simple.)

One Ember

My darkness has overtaken,
My light shrinks beneath its gloom.
When will my wildfire be 'wakened?
That my passion may fin'lly bloom?

I cloak myself with 'mblazoned distress,
While hiding behind vacuous smile.
A facade that none shall e're transgress,
Lest I become completely reviled.

But 'midst my dark and desolate heart,
Dwells one ember still burning bright.
Give it some time, and it shall start
To inspire my retreating light.

One spark is all it ever takes
To set a forest to a blaze.
A flash so small, do not forsake
For its desolation will amaze.

So though I wallow 'midst shadowy mire
Where dark and death unite.
My destined path looks far less dire,
For one ember burns through the night.
