'I've never seen this back fence before,
No matter.
...

As I have ascended with the winds of autumn in spirit
And played her water children upon strings,
Like puppets gone mad.
...

Dandelions scatter their seeds,
Carelessly toss them on the wind,
...

At the lake's edge where the marsh air hangs
With heavy scents of fall.
I saw him there, about his haunts,
Where blue kingfishers call.
...

In long evening shadows I went watching,
Tiptoeing through teddy bears
And capsized ships and blocks.
...

I love old men.
Those who’ve stood
...

So comes the bold stream.
Over smooth stones and water-heavy logs.
A flashing flow of light
That dances and jumps and leaps,
And catches the dawn in vibrant hue,
Cascades the greens to deepest blue.
...

I stand alone in the wind,
But not so alone.
A snowbird's call can be heard.
He greets the day, as do I.
...

I was over-long on the strand today,
Beneath the burning cancer star.
Until my lobster-legs radiate by memory its heat.
I'm over-done by wine and sun.
...

We shared the river late in fall.
We three went down to heed the call,
Of he that dresses white and blue,
A fellow fisher through and through.
...

I knew a moth that knew so much
He thought he’d give the light a touch.
...

My long face-
My long in the tooth face looks frightened.
On this June night you are sixteen.
Seventeen friends will meet in the park
You tell me.
...

FIRST MONTH OF SUMMER
It is June. In the summer of June.
The weather of June and the work of June.
While she is the fair lady to some,
...

Your brother and I went clamming,
Out on the bay in our boat.
Harbor seals watched us on our way.
Their young popped-up their heads
...

On the train to Pusan I saw a hawk
Not much bigger than both my hands put together
Watching her hover and swoop in constant motion
In the haze of the shipyard stacks,
...

In this summer season,
I will not hang-down my head in the heat
...

Though true, there once was a stand
Where you did lay down your head,
...

Sleep? Sleep?
I'm sure I shall sleep.
...

Riding the river in this cold dawn,
In sorrow's swirling, anguished fog.
There come thoughts that move me to ponder
And remember other times of change.
...

When Love
Unknown to me,
Drifted sweetly down from misty heights,
An unknown element bathed my being.

JDC LeDrew Biography

Born poor. Rich in family. Got a brother, mother fahter and sister that I do love. Climbed up some on my way. Rich enough now to find the time to write poems, instead of sweating and pulling green-chain for my bread. I thank the family who gave me that job. Mighty thankful for them, to this day. Thankful for the farm work. Thankful for the all the work. God did kiss me on the lips. Still think of those boys i worked with in those days. Doubt none of them would think to write a poem about it. I always was a bit strange. Peace be with all you who follow. I hope life treats you good enough, or poorly enough, to find the time to write or read a poem. Good for the soul, children)

'I've never seen this back fence before,
No matter.
We'll find it north to south.
You carry the wire stretcher
And I'll pack the spool and clips and hammer.

You pack the staples,
I'll pack us water.
Let's, both of us carry our own dinner.
They'd have to send us out
On the hottest day of summer, wouldn't they?
Well then, Saturday it is. Six o'clock it is.
Meet you at the Four Corners gate.
Good-bye.'

They ride all morning side by side and talk,
Never finding a strand broken or wire sagging.
They laugh and tease and learn each other's ways,
Both find them pleasing.
Both smile easily.
At nine they stop atop a knoll,
She must relieve herself.
There's no tree or bush in sight for a mile.

'I have to pee, ' she tells him with a laugh.
'Turn your head, and no peekin'! '
She holds her horse between them and dismounts.
He watches the far horizon and notes
That the mountains are dressed in purple haze,
The far sage a silver gray.
Heat waves shimmer and roll.
They trick his eyes and his stomach so much
He must look away.

'Got me some paper in my shirt
If you need it, ' he tells her.
'I'll just shake, ' she says with a giggle.
He laughs from deep in his chest
And then flushes bright red when he realizes
He's turned to look at her.
Soft, brown hair hangs in damp curls around her face.
She grins and laughs up at him and then,
She winks a dark-lashed eye.
Both laugh so loudly, they spook the horses.

They find no fence to mend the whole day,
But they open a gate for the entire summer.
By day's end, just as her mother had planned,
They are the best of friends.
