The Balance Beam

Like sleeping on a bed of nails,
Pain and only pain prevails.
To dream and wake and wake and dream,
To balance on the balance beam.

A shard of glass, a house of cards,
Protected by invisible guards.
To wake and dream and dream and wake,
To slake my thirst and stay awake!

Like walking across a bed of coals,
Burning blisters! Bubbling holes!
