A Beginning Poem by Tim Harman

A Beginning

In the beginning
If you can dream of beginnings
If your mind can step back to another ending
A transition between a heart dying
And then in one movement
Beating again
Surprise… Yes it is always a surprise
You learn to live with the slow despair of an ending
But it never prepares you for the acceleration
Of a beginning.

We Began
Some would say were made, you and I
To walk that frail path
That ‘thin white line'
Between love and despair.
Where were you when our eyes first met?
I have never really known
I can only be certain
That your heart was not completely free
For my part I was lost
And you seemed to know a path to safety
So I followed
Not knowing the true difference between right and wrong
Not knowing who was rescuing who, nor what from.
Sometimes, when your tired, it's easiest just to follow
To lead you need insight
I never could plan love, but like most of us
I have tried…

There is a mirror in my room
Above the desk where I write
When words elude me
As only word can
I can raise my eyes, and in that reflection…
Have you ever looked at yourself?
Looked into your own eyes for more than one minute
And then close them, is this another way to dream?
