A Flooded City With Anguished Hearts Poem by Dr John Celes

We thank you God for giving us good rain;
The monsoon failure has been made up fast;
The wells will fill and lakes will also swell;
The drains will flow and cities will get cleaned.

We thank you for opening heaven’s flood-gates;
The state will have water for crops and thirst;
But rains have been incessant, in torrents;
The cities have not witnessed this much rain.

The roads are flooded and people marooned;
The people are in a state of shock for now;
The roads are submerged; houses are flooded;
The people cannot eat or sleep or work.

The current-cuts have darkened homes and streets;
Sewage has mixed with rain-water these days;
The people cannot move to safer zones;
Many could become sick and serious.

We pray to you to halt the rains quickly;
The rain has destroyed landscapes, homes and roads;
Even the airport has been shut for now;
Have mercy Lord on suffering souls at once.

The natural disaster should not go on;
Poor planning too has to be blamed as well;
Open your heart of kindness and help us;
You only can command the rain to stop.

Do rain your mercy now and let rains stop;
Shower your grace and help all those in need;
Almighty God of kindness infinite,
‘Say just one word and waters will recede! ’
