A Girl In This Crummy World Poem by Shaunie Jarrett

A Girl In This Crummy World

A child born into the darkness of this crummy world
Searching for the place she can feel whole
Where she feels that she truly belongs
Searching for the love she never found at home
Searching for the comfort she never received
She has lived through more than you will ever know
Why does no-one see her?
Is she invisible to everyone but me?
Her bruises glow like neon lights
Scars shining like little stars for all to see
Her face pale and full of fear
Uncertainty of the people around her
How does she know who to trust and who to love?
She will never understand what life is like
But she still tries to survive it
Never giving up she is still out there searching
What for she doesn't know
Hoping she'll know it when she sees it
What if she never finds it?
What if she never knows?
Searching high and low, low and high
Stumbling through her life
Every mark a souvenir
Every twinge of pain is a reminder of what she has been through
A reminder of the life you never saw
You were too busy too see
A life hiding in the shadows
A life like you and me
A girl unsure of the world, just like us
A girl who forgets and makes mistakes
A girl who will never realize how much strength life takes
