Closer my God to Thee,
Closer to Thee;
In Lenten time, I must,
Try my best to be;
Ash Wednesday reminds,
Human mortality;
Closer my God to Thee,
Closer to Thee.

Pray, every day I must,
Pray for others;
With fasting when I can,
For sake of neighbors;
Giving my excess all,
To my needy brothers;
Closer my God to Thee,
Closer to Thee.

Read the Bible I must,
Read every word;
Sing hymns and songs divine,
To the Holy Lord;
Give up my lust I must,
Give up my wants all weird;
Closer my God to Thee,
Closer to Thee.

My sins, give up I must,
In totality!
In holiness I must,
Live in piety.
With soul without a sin,
And fly akin a bird.
Closer my God to Thee,
Closer to Thee.
