Although I be only a little girl
A sadness in my heart I felt
Although I be only a little girl.
I went to market to buy me some fruit,
And there a boy I saw aged as me.
But though I knew him not
He placed upon my cheek a kiss most sweet.
This gesture I could not understand,
Nor was I able to reason,
But after a moment or two a tear left my eye
And at once the answer filled my soul;
The boy stood idly by, and although
No word was spoken, his smile told me all.
Simply a bud called love
Had there been implanted.
Although I be only a little girl,
I felt gladness in my heart;
For that little girl I was no longer.
