“a Lost Princess” Poem by Valerie Anne Sumagang

“a Lost Princess”

It is not the usual summer night
A girl is waiting for her knight
Sitting on a big rock near the cliff
Pretending to be a deaf

Enclosed in a dark horizon
Searching for a reason
A reason for her to move on with her life
But when she closed her eyes all she saw was a heart stabbed with a knife

The love story that they shared was like in a Shakespeare’s play
Two different people met halfway
They both conquer the problems that comes around
Fighting with no bound and without feeling down

The feeling was like eternity
They both made it artfully
It was like a dream come true
They both said “I Love You Too”

But their world suddenly shook up
Their world swiftly turned upside down
Her prince surprisingly put her red flag down
And raised his white flag up

That time she’d realized the winner turned to be a loser and gave up
Couldn't die down the expectations they thought they’d live up
She has a misconception that their story was like a fairytale
But ended up to be a folktale

All the promises that he made suddenly vanished
The wound and the scar wouldn’t banish
She was in misery when he left
Like a dying sunset kindled through a cleft

She’d been longing for that day to come
The day when she can finally say “I overcome”
Overcome the pain that she’d been holding for so long
But remembering those memories that they made, made the agony prolong

What did I do to deserve this kind of pain?
How can happiness be regained?
How? How can I mend my broken heart?
These are the questions that always came out?

Finding the answer was like trying to hit the bulls-eye of a dart
And also like solving a puzzle with a missing part
The love story that they shared was like a piece of art
But they end up being apart.

The thing that happened become overrated
She drowned herself with the misery that she hated
She’d come to realize she was like “A Lost Princess”
Waiting for a hero to save her from darkness…
