A Memorial Lunch Poem by Ray Hansell

A Memorial Lunch

Having lunch in the afternoon
Sitting at a table for two
We filled the time between us
Doing what people do

Catching up on the time
That has passed between us
Talking about things going on
But we never talked about us

It seems we both avoided
What we didn’t want to talk about
We both did a very good job
Maybe because we were filled with doubt

But the afternoon was pleasant
As we sat and talked while we ate
Maybe deep inside both knowing
Our attempts are too late

What we shared for so very long
Maybe it can’t be saved
But I know that when we were together
How much the two of us really cared
