A Messenger On The Battlefield Poem by Phillip Robertson

A Messenger On The Battlefield

He just stood there
so motionless and yet so alive
he's heavy breath so clear in sound
his eyes stricken with fear
his mind a warzone in itself
confronted with a battle of courage and horror
so bold for a boy
i had heard of boys being told to carry guns
but he so young who stood before me
i nearly cried
and on the day i told his mother what had happened
she was shellshocked
and after the war was over
noone remembered the little messenger boy
noone but me
i alone remembered the boy with the letter and the gun
and i weeped for him
