A Moment To Last A Lifetime Poem by Robert Mahoney

A Moment To Last A Lifetime

The sun has set in the western sky
And the moon with it's silver shine
Begins it's trek across the night
To mark the passing time

I've never felt so peaceful in all my life

Lying here beneath the stars with you here by my side
Nothing could be more perfect
Nothing could be more right
I feel your breath upon my neck
Your body close to mine

I've never felt so peaceful in all my life

I reach out for your hand
And turn to meet your gaze
To look upon your eyes

But no one's there
I lie here on my own
And I remember...I remember
The memories come flooding back
A torrent of despair
That fateful night replayed
The shot that took your life,
In essence, took my own
An echo that shattered the heart

As you fell to the earth, time slowed to a stop
A moment to last a lifetime
I tried to scream, to call your name
But I could scarcely breathe
I longed to cry, to voice my pain
But the tears refused to come

I've never felt so helpless in all my life

As I look upon you now, in memory,
Lying there in a crimson pool,
The floodgates have finally come crashing down
And the tears flow forth like rain
