A Neighbor That I Knew Poem by Ray Hansell

A Neighbor That I Knew

He was always humble
In everything he'd do
If you needed a helping hand
He'd be the first there for you

He'd give you the shirt off his back
As the saying goes
Courtesy and respect
For others, always shows

He never complained about his life
Or just how hard living could be
He always wore a smile
When talking with you or me

But now his fragile body
Is slowly wearing down
So many years of working hard
Planting harvest in the ground

He's reached a point in his life
Where he is just plain worn out
He wonders why year after year
He lives his life in doubt

He knows he's paid his dues
He knows he always gave his best
He knows that he'll find his peace
When he goes to his eternal rest

So for now he'll keep on going
For as long as he can
He remembers back to his youth
When this long journey began
