A Part Of Us Poem by Paul Perkins

A Part Of Us

A part of us - November-1990

I sit with shot nerves
and a cold beer -
courage flows from the bottle
now that you are not here;

Many times while you slept,
I have held you
until your arms
fell away in the darkness;

For many years
as a child,
I've held onto dreams,
wishing to believe what I did not see;

For many years as a man,
I've held onto you,
wishing to believe what i did not see,

Then you left -
I guess you had to -
but I could not
because I love you -

Now -
only fading shadows
of love dreams reside -
dreams once held dearly -
forever a part of us.
