A Rejection Poem by Cameron Gallant

A Rejection

I know you love me, through and though
But my heart’s set and not on you
Things would never work you see
Together we could never be

I’m sorry if I’ve caused you pain
But this way’s best, let me explain
Things would never work you see
That love between you and me

For one I’m married, for two I’m old
And I would never sell my soul
To someone younger, someone naïve
Together we could never be

You say I’m perfect and say we could
Fly if only I’d say we should
We’d fly so high and in the sky
You’d sing me a soft lullaby

But sorry dear, they’re hollow words
And butterflies fall prey to birds
Things would never work you see
My dear, what’s not can never be
