A Solitary Elm Tree Poem by Irfanulla Shariff

A Solitary Elm Tree

Rating: 4.5

A single Elm tree
In the meadows
Calling the black
Capped Chickadees
Oh! You pretty
Little songbirds
Look at me
I am still here
All by myself

I have managed to escape
The axe and survived
I can't migrate
Like you guys
From one place to another
How about building
A nest on me
And settle down

You can be
My great companions
I don't want to be
Alone any more
I host insects
And spiders for you
My seeds and buds
Can be your delicious
Breakfast, lunch
And dinner

By the way
You can nourish me
With your droppings
And amuse me
With your breathtaking melodies
I also need your caress
I am madly
In love with you
Please don't reject
My humble request

What a beautiful poem! So touching and poignant. Trees are the most generous and enduring living things.
