A Special Thicket And A Special Ram Poem by Mac Wilkey

A Special Thicket And A Special Ram

This spot on earth was once a forest green
Acacia trees grew strong-so thick and tall
But axe or saw had never touched their bark
For lightning struck before these trees could fall.

And after years the earth was barren there
'Til seeds preserved were stirred up by a breeze
At last some sprouts shot up and soon arose
A thicket thick with young acacia trees

A place where lambs and other tiny beasts
Could hide from large prey if a need arose
A place where once this very special ram
Had played in safety hidden from his foes.

He must have forced his way a thousand times
Through saplings that he had to spread apart
His strength sufficent each time for the task
When larger beasts had given him a start.

But on one special day, perhaps he spied
A pair of men approaching from below
One carried wood; the other had a knife
The fire was scariest-he just had to go

Perhaps he'd seen the fires that often roared
When lightning struck when he was just a lamb
His instinct for survival spurred him off
He hastened down the path-a frightened ram

He met resistance more than 'ere before
He barely pushed aside the first two trees
And couldn't budge the pair that next he faced
He smelled the fire now upwind in the breeze

He kept his silence for about an hour
And heard the conversation from the men
He must have seen the glint of sun on steel
And startled thus he cried aloud just then

Two pairs of hands soon gripped the captured beast
And he was slain by faithful Abraham
God had ordained so many years before
This special thicket and this special ram.
