A War Survivor Poem by Francis Duggan

A War Survivor

He came to this far southern Land as a Stateless man
From the war ravaged African Country of Sudan
Where from those determined to kill him he was forced to flee
To live for many years in a displaced people's camp as a war refugee

On an attack on his village his wife and all of his five children died
In Sudan from those who murdered his family for him no safe place to
hide
He lives in Australia as a permanent resident today
From the Country he loves in kilometers far away

A handsome dark skinned man in his thirties athletic looking and tall
As height goes many to him does look small
He does not have a partner or wife and he lives on his own
And of happier days of he would have known

So many near and dear to him their lives have lost
The war in Sudan to him came at a huge cost
Though happy to be living he sometimes feel close to tears
As he thinks of his family murdered in their young years

He may never visit his homeland again
Perhaps for as long as he lives in Australia he will remain
Those near and dear to him in wars their lives were lost
His destiny in life to him has come at a huge cost.
