Adjusting To Pain Poem by Lawrence S. Pertillar

Adjusting To Pain

Few can say,
They have been isolated...
From unexpected changes to make.
And even fewer still,
Can admit without trembling lips...
There is a fear they face,
Wishing for the possibility...
Time gives them enough of it,
To prepare and embrace...
For what comes next.
That promises to replace,
A routine of a comfort gone.
Erased with a quick fading away.

What the ffffee, fie foe...
Has come to knock on 'every' door?
That has left both Jack and Jill,
Running and screaming away from the hill.
Even big bad wolves,
Are witnessed to be huffing and puffing.
Out of breath.
What is this that has come,
Threatening to ruin all fantasies done.

Pulled and dragged away,
From an onslaught of various distractions.
With all eyes and minds,
Stretched beyond belief...
That one nightmare,
Can come and remain with such sustained...
Longevity.
And not to play hide 'n' seek.

Few can say,
They have not been shocked...
Into a reality wanting it to stop.
Or a truth.
Too...
Truthful.
Too...
Realistic.
And...
Just too much to take!
Nothing prescribed legally,
Can be imagined smiling on this ugliness.

And to think,
The possibility of adjusting to this...
As a permanent way of life to live,
For those who paid top dollar...
To travel from one delusion to another?
Has got to be frightening and painful.
With a choice from which to choose,
Which one would be easier...
To accept and adjust with love to give it.
