Africa I Hate You Poem by John Promise

Africa I Hate You

(thanks to e e c)

Africa i hate you
because if it rains at an intersection and the lights are against you
you don't stand bowed waiting
you always gap it

and because you walk three thousand miles
to sell mobile chargers at a stop light
because that represents
real opportunity

Africa i hate you because
you can be down to your last kwacha
and your last mango
but you still offer me a bite

and smile with delight
when I take one

Africa i hate you because if
ghana does well in the world cup soccer
then it's
us against the world

no questions asked
and because we watch ghana
and make ends meet and smile in the lap
of death Africa

i love you
