An Abundance Of Hope Poem by Susan Williams

An Abundance Of Hope

Rating: 4.8

.
I suppose it is an adventure
to NOT fall off a chair,
but I was seeking
more positive adventures than that.
.
So...
.
Today I searched for an old friend
and found him... in my memories...
still young and funny and frozen in time amid an abundance of hope
and the world spread out before him like a picnic blanket.
.
He was seventeen when last I saw him
getting drunk with me on cheap Ripple wine behind the red barn
showing me his latest sketches and pictures of his latest paintings
and telling me that his girlfriend of four years had broken up with him.
.
Three weeks later it was in the newspaper
a tiny four line story on the second page and that was all
about that lonely little dark and desolate house down the street
where he had hung himself and all his hopes.
.
.

Susan, this is absolutely magnificent. I think convention says that when all else disappears or fails, one can always cling to hope. There will always be an abundance of hope. What many rarely, if ever, face is the possibility that hope may just not be enough at all times. You've exposed a great irony- -brilliantly. A 10!

I knew it! I knew it! ! I knew it! ! ! I knew you would pick up my ambivalence toward HOPE. Hope is something we humans need to get through life here on earth... a gift and a blessing from God- - but at the same time it is a whip, a scourge, in the hands of demons. Thank you so much for reading and commenting- - it is always so encouraging when a reader gets it! ! ! ! And you so often do.

A very sad story. I love the image of the picnic blanket. It makes you think how vulnerable kids are at that age. Hurts seem so enlarged. This is a very good poem, Sue.

Susan, I plan to use this poem in my under-construction May 2023 Showcase of poems. I hope you don't mind if you still have memories of your friend. : ) bri

This is so tragic, and close to home, because a former student of mine had broken up with his girlfriend, and when she wouldn't get back together with him, he shot himself while she was talking to him on the phone. Game over, no chance to play again.

Suicide is never the answer. So many loved ones get hurt deeply.
