An Old Man's Request Poem by John A. Hancock

An Old Man's Request

The day draws slowly to a close
While his fear quickly settles in
Watching as the sun goes down
Another sleepless night to begin
A worn bible graces his bedside table
Within reach of his trembling hands
Its presence the only comfort too
This lonely frightened man
Tis the night the old man he fears
That gentle journey into the land of dreams
Where youth once invited this coming darkness
Age now rejects this tranquil scene
A candle shrouds his bedroom chamber
Illuminating a shadowed figure deep in prayer
upon his knees
With just one wish to pass his lips
Tis the daylight he prays once more to see
