An Unpleasant Memory Poem by Francis Duggan

An Unpleasant Memory

It's only six to seven miles I've walked that far before
From Millstreet to the Kerry border by the Town of Rathmore
And though to some six miles may seem a long walk to a person young and strong
A six miles jog is easy the distance doesn't seem long.

To some people from Cork City as I can well recall
A person from Duhallow is not from Cork at all
Tell them you are a Corkman and they may not agree
To them the Kerry border is nearer to the Lee.

I remember that County final when Millstreet lost to the Barrs
We were taunted by city yobbos as we walked back to our cars
They shouted up St Finbars we had a mighty win
Our fellows from Cork city humbled the Kerrymen.

And to us proud Corkonians from Duhallow and Millstreet
Their remarks were more hurtful than the sour taste of defeat
But years later when four from Millstreet Cork All Ireland jerseys wore
They did not say the border was further from Rathmore.

The St Finbars looked the better team and Millstreet had gone down
And the County cup would not be coming back to Millstreet Town
And the thing that hurt me most of all was not that Millstreet did not win
But when the City yobbos shouted we've humbled the Kerry men.
