An Unmarked Grave Poem by Francis Duggan

An Unmarked Grave

Is it a male or a female in the unmarked grave
One who died in shame or one who died brave
Or one who did not have a family or friend
Lets hope he or she did not have a bad end?
On the unmarked grave only rank weeds do grow
And who was this person does anyone know?
'Tis as if his or her life to nothing did amount
As if he or she as a person did not count
Anonymity in life as in death much the same
No one comes to tend the grave without a name
On the unmarked grave the weeds grow rank and wild
The person who lay there once some mother's child
To honour his or her memory not even a rose
Inequality is in death as in life i suppose.
