An Unsung Hero Poem by Francis Duggan

An Unsung Hero

His name will never be on a war memorial wall
For to arms he did not answer the Nation's call
His motto is live for as long as you can
Hero worship is worthless to a dead woman or man,
The last post will never be played at his grave
He would rather die old than to die young and brave
A soldier or patriot he never could be
Yet you will not find one as noble as he
He saved young Melinda the daughter of Rose and Billy Maguire
He dragged her to safety when their home it caught fire
But an award for bravery he did turn down
He is one who has no desire for renown
An unsung hero his praises will never be sung
He would rather live to be old than to die brave and young.
