An Unusual Word Poem by Joyce Hemsley

An Unusual Word

Humour intended.

'Exigencies' of the service
caused him to hesitate.
Instead of leaving the office at six
he would not be leaving till eight.
On 'phoning his sweetheart to tell her
that their outing would have to wait
She said: 'I don't understand my dear
exigencies is a word I cannot translate.
But if it means 'pretty young women'
my heart and I will emigrate.'
