And Henry Kendall's Verses I Remember Poem by Francis Duggan

And Henry Kendall's Verses I Remember

I climbed the hill between the tall gum trees
Where undergrowth reached right up to the knees
And on the trees the voices of wood birds ringing
Of over one hundred bellbirds at their singing.

One hundred birds like one hundred small bells chiming
Long years ago when in the mood for rhyming
Poet Henry Kendall honoured the bell miner
Than his 'Song Of The Bellbirds' there has not been finer.

And Henry Kendall long since gone to glory
And his poems live on in literary history
But the song of the bellbirds keep on never ending
And so many hearts their bell like notes befriending.

An April day and mild the Autumn weather
And bellbirds chiming in the wood together
And Henry Kendall's verses I remember
A song he wrote for bellbirds in September.
