'Approach Cautiously'

Who fathoms
that a sign with that warning
can't be for the wood pile it's on
if it can't be seen till you're at it,
but must warn for what lies ahead,

might be enraged
to be told,
'It might have been moved,
and when you arrived, the ogre
otherwise engaged.'

Yes it seems a sign saying 'Don't Approach' would be more suitable. I'm not familiar with Heart of Darkness, but the poem it inspired is undeniably poignant and intelligent

Reminds me a bit of the sign: Abandon all hope, ye who enter. Wonderful writing, Douglas. I hope to see more along these lines
