As If To Humans Alone Poem by Francis Duggan

As If To Humans Alone

People kill foxes because their fowl they does eat
But humans as well enjoy eating fowl meat
But most people will tell you that this is not wrong
As if to humans alone the right to eat other life forms belong
Perhaps to feed her young in their nearby den
A fox recently stole from me a young laying hen
I vowed for my hen's life with her life she would pay
But on this I have changed my mind since that was yesterday
I too eat the flesh of birds, fish and animals but few of does say
He is a flesh eater this is not okay
But on the fox who killed my young hen I only wish ill
And had I a gun at the culprit I would shoot to kill
Yet I eat the creatures others for me kill to eat
And only a minority say it is a crime to eat meat.
