As You Start College... (Poem To My Past Self) Poem by Kelsey Gallant

As You Start College... (Poem To My Past Self)

You're about to begin the most interesting journey
You've ever had in your life
There'll be pressure and struggles, trials and troubles
Plenty of good but plenty of strife

And people you know may turn out to be enemies
The road to success is not a perfect place
You'll be faced with decisions that stretch you to breaking
But it'll all be okay if you just keep your faith

You've come from a small world of homeschool and fun
You don't know what it's like to be half on your own
True, a dorm's not something on your horizon
But college life still takes place when you're living at home

Don't choose to be tempted, and run if you are
So many situations put you to the test
Choose as your friends those who bring out the best in you
But never forget to be kind to the rest

Now I've warned you on socials, so now for the part
That won't be so surprising to hear
The workload is heavy, assignments are long
Get in check from the start of the year

Your transition most likely won't be so bad
But I'll remind you that everything comes with a price
Your teachers will make you work hard; don't slack off
And before you do anything, make sure you think twice.
