Atlantis Poem by Indrajit Chatterjee

Atlantis

In my first year of formal education
I found myself alone in the vast world; unknown,
And unnerved as I was I was not prepared
Not to let my little heart sink in the torrid ocean.

There in the multitude of new faces,
I found one that stood out.
There in the sheer cacophony of one upmanship
I confess, I felt proud.

Together we sailed through stormy nights
Roughed it out over windy seas.
The rapids were mighty and hard to overcome
But even nature was forced to bow its head before our charm.

Today! Oh Today! I see a different picture, I do!
What false ideas and accursed promises of wealth has done to you.
Like a rat running hard after the cheese, speeding twice as fast
While the master your serve owns your allegiance you so carelessly cast.

In the wide canvas of the plagiarized fantasy, I believe
It was you who held the belief that ‘one' was true.
The mythical island where once dwelt a civilization
Too glorified for any sane mind to even consider that view.

So, permit me to make a stinging comparison
That our friendship was quite like that fabled island.
It was doomed to implode however much fascinating the landscape
Just like Atlantis did so, mockingly, while humans embellished its fake grave.
