Await Poem by Win Gray

Await

We woke this morning and you were not here
The men in blue had come
and took you away while the sun was still shining
We didn’t know they were coming;
we would have sent you away
and hide you from the indignity of slanderous allegations
We, would have put on the mask of invisibility
to arrest enquiry about your whereabouts
We didn’t know they were coming,
so they came and held you captive

Here in the quietude of the morn
we watch the sun rise
from the darkened glass window in your room
and await your arrival
Commotion broke out inside our heads
louder than feuding fans at a football match
more clamorous than ten thousand swarms of bees
O dearest one, come home tomorrow
to frolic, vexation and quarrel
that make our dysfunction functional,
away from a system of heated, cold, iron justice
and lack of morality
strengthened by bars with internal truths of jailbirds
We know in due time you will be here
but our anxious hearts cry night and day
and bleed your sorrow and misfortune
So, we prepare for your arrival with tears of joy
to welcome you back home
to a happy life that awaits you.
