Barry Port Poem by Robert Gilchrist

Barry Port

Rating: 5.0

Barry Port is an interesting man
Hailing from up Coen way on Cape York
He retired recently, a man in his seventies
The only photo I have of him
Is from an ABC interview
He is looking thoughtfully at the sky
With inscrutable eyes
In his Qld Police Service uniform
His story comes to me via his niece
A proud Lama Lama woman
Barry was the last of a breed
The aboriginal tracker
The last employed in Australia
A proud tradition
I reckon you would have a tale or two to tell Barry
Yarning with smoky eyes around a fire
Or over a coldy at Barry's local bar
Named in his honour
Yep... I think I would like that yarn mate.
