Be Calm Oh Mighty Sea Poem by Wilfred Deigh

Be Calm Oh Mighty Sea

Be calm oh mighty sea
Thy roar so frightening, all can hea'
we're but peasants crossing, thy estuarine
drown not our thirsty gullets with thy brine

Be calm oh mighty sea
a lullaby we'd sing, in awful glee
would it calm thy wrathful waves
t'escape eternal rest in salty graves.

Be calm oh mighty sea
of age long sins, we plea
We knows't not for sure
h'much beating this boat can endure.

Be calm oh mighty sea
frightened bodies, spirits have fleed
'tis awful death's tale
a story for weeping hearts, too stale.

Be calm oh mighty sea
for aged ones and suckling babes we plea
death in warm beds embrace we'd rather seek
than answer thy creator's call home awful quick.

Be calm oh mighty sea,
Libations we'd pour for thee
goats for thy alter we'd slaughter
Our cries if thou wouldst hea''
to calm thy wrathful waters.
