Behind A Smile Poem by Salma Ahmed

Behind A Smile

He stood far in the back,
Hiding in his suit, black,
As the bitterness of today’s sunshine,
Flow into him with every sip of sour wine.
He watched her from afar,
Her eyes sparkling like a star,
Her beautiful lips of crimson red,
And the white veil over her head
Making her float in light like a fairy,
As melodies took off so merry,
And down the alter her walk did start,
The celebration of the crushing of his heart
Like the white roses at her feet,
Like glass shattering in the heat,
The fire of life that was his,
Of the night filled with every love word there is,
He wandered the meadows of his mind,
He embraced every dead flower he could find,
And in the dungeons he was lost,
In a soul turned brown by the frost,
He found the touch of her hand,
Their names written on the sand,
By something as delicate as water, washed away
Into a whole ocean of cruel cold grey.
And it cast him where today he stands,
Wishing that one day he did understand
Her innocence, hopes and her every dream,
Her fear, despair and her silent scream,
But here he is and the time has run,
To the time where there’s nothing to be said or done,
Down the alter she did go,
How could her tongue utter the words ‘’I do’’?
Let his arms embrace her and their lips entwine,
Let him flee to heaven with what was forever mine.
But forever is such a fickle word,
With so much meaning but to the world unheard,
And when came the break of their kiss,
She turned around in her flowing white bliss,
With her crown of curls made of gold
Allowing the grace of her soul to unfold
So the crowd could blast in cheers,
And he sensed the moment he always fears,
The drowning of the soul when their eyes meet,
And they go deeper in silence so discreet,
There goes the smile, faint, sweet and bright,
Racing towards him like shining spears in the light,
Easily finding their way to his heart,
Announcing the time he must depart.
It said ‘’How I wish you understood,
Why he’s standing where you should have stood’’
But like a dream with an end that was near,
In his heart he could clearly hear,
Her soul in a love song. happily ever after,
In every little word and every single laughter,
So before he walked away he gave a smile,
He wished her happiness and bliss, but for him
It will be dark for a while.
