Blissfully Unaware! Poem by Denis Martindale

Blissfully Unaware!

The first time that I saw her smile
Seemed a revelation,
And I felt captive for a while
In my meditation.
And when she laughed, my heart rate rose,
And I knew this meant love,
And yet, this fact nobody knows,
Except the Lord above.
And so I chose to close my eyes,
Accepting what I could,
Because that's how I realise,
For me, love's seldom good.
Love's never stayed in my heart long,
It drifts and leaves me cold.
Despite these feelings now so strong,
So new, but soon so old.
She had no clue the love that lived
Within this heart of mine,
As if God sent a precious gift,
Meant as my Valentine.
So even though I felt love stir,
With doubts, I turned away!
I look back on not telling her,
And now regret each day!
