Brother Poem by Victoria Gauci

Brother

Brother of ours you are out there,
In the world all on your own,
You haven’t been back in a long time,
It’s time you took a ride home,
I wonder if you think about,
Coming home and mother is gone,
It would be the very first time,
You would have to face this head on,
How easy it must be to pretend,
That everything is the same as it was,
That god didn’t reach down and take her,
To the sky and heaven above,
I often play games in my mind’s eye,
Where she is still alive and well,
It lasts for a time, then goes away,
Then I return to the reality of hell,
I know that you’re feeling it every day,
How you miss her and think of her here,
Living and breathing, walking the Earth,
In our minds we can see it so clear,
Your brothers and sisters miss you,
We live in this reality every day,
We know Mom isn’t here anymore,
You can’t let it keep you away,
She is part of the woven fabric,
That keeps us siblings held together,
Her strength and her love bind us as one,
What we feel cannot be measured,
Come home little brother, please come home,
Time cannot be returned,
Each minute that ticks away on the clock,
Comes with a lesson to be learned,
Family and love are the most important things,
In this crazy thing we call living,
Our mother instilled them inside of us,
We must continue with the giving,
When I say this, I speak for all of us,
We miss you and want you to come home,
We know that you won’t stay forever,
But with us you are never alone.
