Brown And Proud Of It Poem by June FeirCruz

Brown And Proud Of It

Rating: 5.0

Someone told me I should be used to it by now:
Being ogled at and objectified
The curse of being a HOT FILIPINA WOMAN
The curse of being an attractive woman.
This is supposed to be flattering to me?
To be thought of like an object? Devoid of feelings and intelligence?
Where is it written in a stone that this is the law?
That men can just undress me with their eyes without my consent?
I go to a gathering and my host wonders how I know a lot of the guests
I came not knowing anyone, but I introduce myself just the same.
People will be people, you find common ground
Unless I walked in, in a crowd of snobs and bigots
Where I would be perceived as a beautiful stranger with skin that is brown
With a quick wit to match and a pride that is unequal.
*Dedicated to all Filipina beauty and brains out there*

Well said June! This is for all people, all women, not just Filipinas. Having spent time travelling widely in the Philippines, I have come to know and appreciate the deep beauty - NOT skin-deep - of Filipino/a people. I feel privileged to count several Filipinos amongs my friends and am profoundly grateful to a number of individuals for their friendship and support in the difficult job we were doing.

Wow, you're Pinay! Kaya pala...maganda at matalino! oh, 'di ba? Kung hindi ito naiintindihan ng ibang nagbabasa, bahala na muna sila sa buhay nila.: -) i like your attitude. keep it up, dear.: -)
