Burning Out Poem by Brian Murphy

Burning Out

A smothered flame struggles to ignite
Repressed, starved for strength
Darkness floods, searching out, drowning
The embers glow, fading then surging forth
Will is not absent
Faith not lost

Eager to survive
Yet an essential element is lost
A flicker, a crackle, a hiss
A line of smoke reaches toward the night sky
It dissipates, it disappears

Helpless
