But Past Glories Can Be Forgot Poem by Francis Duggan

But Past Glories Can Be Forgot

He's out of breath if he walk a mile he once could run all day
And the years now on his body show and his hair once brown is gray
He was a champion footballer i've heard old timers say
But past glories can be forgot or so 'twould seem that way.

He kicked the goal that won the flag in nineteen fifty two
And he was the hero of the day he made the dream come true
The bonfires blazed, the champagne flowed, the band played through the town
And he remembers to this day his moment of renown.

His winners medal on display hang on his bedroom wall
And every time he look at it the memory he recall
The egg shaped football leaves his boot and through the goalpost fly
The siren blow, the crowd applaud, the memory bring back joy

He kicked the goal that won the flag some fifty years ago
And he moved quickly in those days but the years have made him slow
He was a champion footballer i've heard old timers say
But past glories can be forgot or so 'twould seem that way.
