Byron Turkey Greece

Rating: 5.0

When 'Moslems' was 'Turks',
Turkey glowed with the triumphs
of all under Allah.
In imaginations
it rose to the heights
that had been the Alhambra.

In Turkey you were underwhelmed.

Club-footed Byron was...
by the muzzled women.

'Don Juan' was becoming a bit of a joke,
but the fair-playing side of the bloke
sought to free from its Turkish yoke,
Greece, cradle of demoke.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
demoke: a word for 'democracy' Byron would have had no hesitation in coining had it been needed for rhyme in 'Don Juan'.
