Can I Cry? Poem by Sonya Johnson

Can I Cry?

I want to do it out loud

I want to weep uncontrollably

I want to forget that no one is looking

I want to go inside, way down and pull
out the emotions that cause my eyes
to welt up with tears.

I want to knock over furniture
rant and rave like a spoiled child.

I want to curl up in a corner and sob
like a loved one has been called home.

I want the water to run from my eyes so
much that they begin to swell.

I want to scream into my pillow and
ask God why.

I want to silently gaze out a window
and just let that one tear fall.

Can I cry?

I’ll do it for all the lovers
For all the ones who have lost someone.

I’ll do it for humanity
For those that have been passed over in life.

I’ll do it for justice
For those that crimes have been committed against.

I’ll do it for peace
For the world to come to some resolution.

I’ll do it for you
My tears will be the prayers for you to have
Never ending happiness….so I ask

Can I cry?
