Cold Deck Poem by Matthew Densley

Cold Deck

I sit alone, my deck in hand
Playing solitaire, not poker
'Though Jack of hearts, I wish I were
I fear I'm just a Joker

I would never want to be an Ace
As the Aces stand alone
Ironic, that I say this
While I'm shuffling on my own

I would like to be a King one day
Though not without a Queen to suit
But the only things life deals to me
Is a pair of dice and fruit

I was never one to play with hearts
For love, to me, is not a game
It's a gamble from the very start
And the ante is your shame

It's said that 'Diamonds are forever'
Yet I know, that I am not
But I will wager all I have
For a chance at Cupids pot

I seem to only use the spades
To dig myself a deeper hole
And I don't belong to any clubs
I'm only looking for one soul

A pair's the hand I long to hold
Cause' pairs are in two parts
No other card will suit me though
Than to have the two of hearts

I would like to trade these plastic chips
For a pot of true loves gold
Unlucky loser, I might be
But I will never fold
