Colour Me Black Poem by Christina Simmons

Colour Me Black

Rating: 5.0

What's the colour black?
I hear you ask
It's a colour! I hear you say
It's you! It's me!
The colour black is beautiful
You're beautiful! I'm beautiful too.

It's not for him to know it!
It's not for them to know it!
It's for you to know it!

Bold strong in spirit
It's intricately intriguing
It's intuitively knowledgeable
Instinctively insightful
Have you lost it?

To love the colour black
Is to know the colour black
It's your colour!
A little soiled maybe?
Damaged from way back then?
Not feeling quite fair?
Make it prosperous.

Find it! Discover it! It's yours!
It's mine! Touch it! Feel it!
Know it! Show it!

Nurture the colour black
Don't wait for him to do it!
Be kind to the colour black
It's more than just a colour
It's me! It's you!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I wrote this poem when I was struggling to understand why I was shown so much repulsion being of a unique race: and recognising myself as a person who mattered no matter what others may say or perceived about me. Society can do, say anything and lead me to believed whatever but at the end of the day it's how I interpret things to myself. Coming to terms with who I am.
