Conscription World War Ii Poem by Joyce Hemsley

Conscription World War Ii

'Take your pick, and please be quick'
The air, the land or the sea?
Just how it was back in World War Two
When young men joined the Military.

The Bevin Boys - was an extra option
But this was by ballot, no time for chat.
And instead of a place on the battlefield
Men worked in mines with smell of a rat.

So those were the 'got to do it' days
Objectors were four-feather guys.
Young men conscripted, that was that.
No place for wherefores and whys.

'Take your pick, and please be quick'
Just how it was, if you were a Brit.
